Choosing a photographer for your wedding

When you are planning a wedding, one of the most important decisions you can make is choosing the right wedding photographer. It's usually the first decision made after the date and location. Wedding venues are usually booked a year or more in advance, so once the couple has found a venue that is available for their desired date, it's best to lock it in right away. Many couples choose to have their ceremony at the same location as the reception, but if they are booking a church wedding, that's one more piece of the puzzle.

So you have your date set and your venue locked in, deposit paid. Now for the photographer! Wedding photographers often book out a year in advance as well, so it's a good idea to start looking around. There are a number of things to consider when booking a photographer for your wedding. I have a free email guide: "Seven Steps to Booking the Right Photographer for your Wedding." Here are a few bullet points:

  • Step 1: Define your style: Are you drawn to an Editorial, Fine Art or Photo-journalistic style of photography? (Don’t worry, my guide will explain the difference!)
  • Step 2: Consider Value: Pay for the coverage and quality you need to record the biggest day of your life (so far).
  • Step 3: Experienced Pro Photographer or Talented Newbie? Price is not the only consideration when choosing a wedding photographer!
  • Step 4: Find Compatible Personalities: Bright and bubbly or quietly professional?  You found your perfect mate, but did you ever think about finding a photographer whose personality works with yours?
  • Step 5: Know the Expectations: Wedding size and style, number of guests and time of day or year are all important facts to share with your photographer in the weeks leading up to the wedding!
  • Step 6: Think about Keepsakes: Ask your photographer to show you a sample of their albums or wall art. You can’t display a USB drive on your wall, but printed photographs can be shared for years to come.
  • Step 7: Why engagement photos are important: Consider an engagement
