A Winter's Tale

It snowed last night for the first time this season.  It didn't last long; it melted by morning but the flakes were in the air all day today. A week ago, we said goodbye to daylight savings time for another season. The holidays are coming up fast!  It doesn't help that I have a lot of family birthdays at the end of the year. My sister and two grandchildren share their birthdays with the week of Thanksgiving.  Everything seems to accelerate as we try to fit things in before the end of the year!

Snow is a part of winter in Wisconsin. TV Meteorologists spend an excessive amount of time working on their predictions for the likelihood of a white Christmas. Snow puts us in the mood for the holidays, despite the fact that, statistically, most of our snow comes in January. A little snow (not enough to impede travel) sends us scurrying off to start our Christmas shopping. The short, dark days this time of year may be the reason many people are already putting up the Christmas lights. Light is life, an antidote to the darkness of the season.

November days may be short and dark, but a bright, sunny, snowy day with blue skies and pristine snowfall is hard to beat. It reminds us that there is beauty in any season. And remember, before the holidays are over, we are already through the winter solstice and the days are getting longer! That is enough to make January a month to anticipate with joy!
